Is it common?

Natural stone spalling is a common occurrence, especially in certain types of stone and in areas with harsh environmental conditions. Sedimentary rocks like limestone and sandstone are particularly susceptible to spalling due to their porous nature and tendency to weather more quickly than other types of stone.

Do all stones shale?

It is important to note that not all natural stones are as prone to spalling. If you’d prefer that your stone isn’t as likely to spall you can let your salesperson know and they will help you find the right fit.

Why does it happen?

Spalling can also occur more frequently in areas with significant temperature fluctuations or freeze-thaw cycles, as well as in areas with high levels of moisture, exposure to salt or other chemicals, or other factors.

Can I prevent it?

Spalling isnʼt preventable in some stones but it is avoidable as not all stones are as prone to spalling.

Is it an issue?

While spalling looks concerning it is not typically an issue. One of the many benefits of natural stone is that it is stone thru and thru so when it flakes or chips you still see stone unlike manufactured products.
